A Festive New Year’s Wish – Une célébration, des vœux
Updated for 2019. Rituals, pagan rites, initiations, libations, and ceremonious gatherings at midnight. This is how it has always been when Bacchus calls us to join the festivities this day, or under the watch of the moon. This painting is one that I have always loved, painted by Jacques Chuilon during his ‘neo-classical period’ employing mostly mythological themes, executed with flat surfaces of ripe colors and delicious curves. It is a large acrylic on stretched canvas, sold to an art collector in Hong Kong, and inspired upon antique themes. We shared the experience several times in recent years of traveling to China (not to mention New York and Washington, DC) for openings in galleries and international art shows and fairs, in Canton as well as Shanghai, where I learned a bit of the art-dealer’s trade by representing and selling his paintings. Extremely satisfying to see these works hung and eventually sold around the world and matched with the persons who appreciate them.
Joining this popular “Bacchanal” from last year, for 2019 I’ve added below just a small number of other examples of Jacques’ prolific production, including his paintings and also photography. They range in many styles from neo-classical references and portraits in his unique palettes of colors, to highly personal digital images. I will continue to add, and promise to share any comments with the artist! Happy New Year to all.
