RESTORED : THE VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH THE INFANT SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

We made a special and very worthwhile visit to see this painting today. 2020 is the 500th anniversary of Raphael’s death, and the Louvre, which possesses numerous paintings by the master from Urbino, has just restored this masterpiece which has regained its place in the Grand Gallery.

Known as La belle jardinière, the work represents the Virgin Mary sitting on a rock, holding Jesus ready to grasp a book from her lap, while the little Saint John the Baptist kneels respectfully before him. The scene takes place in a bucolic landscape strewn with violets, symbols of the Virgin’s humility, and columbines, symbols of the Passion of Christ.

The restoration, which required six months, consisted of the removal of old varnish, helping to recover a clear and brilliant palette. The iron in certain green pigments had turned to a rust color. The depth of the space was also recovered thanks to a clearer distinction between greens and blues in the distance. The skin tones regained their divine radiance and the sky regained its bright lapis lazuli blue hue. The lovely original frame was also restored.

A panel of treated glass that protects the painting. However, in one closeup view, one can make out my yellow K-Way rainjacket.

I’ve also included an older image here from Wikipedia, dating from before the restoration. Check out the difference!
