Wonderful and numerous representations from the outpouring of Greco’s unique creativity, tracing his greatest successes from his native Crete to Venice and Madrid. There’s a fine, early portable altarpiece (see an image at the top of comments), small Byzantine inspired religious scenes, truly marvelous and characterful portraits, and this majestic ‘Assumption of the Virgin’ (1577-1579). So very much worth the visit.
At the check-out, well-documented collection of Greco-related books led me to stumble upon and purchase (for 2 euros!), Balthazar Gracián’s best maxims, in French named ‘L’Art de vivre avec élégance.’ Reading this, also, has been life-changing. My Spanish speaking friends are truly fortunate to have this in their native language and their rich culture. Always something new to discover, I guess!
