A BIT OF CINNAMON, A BIT OF NOSTALGIA

Just from the oven, this warm apple crisp (for some reason called “apple crumble” elsewhere in the universe), is a favorite family recipe, which came down from Laney. Laney was my Grandmother’s dearest cousin, Madeleine.

If I can only recall one thing about her, it was a morning in that cabin up in the Adirondacks, when she happily stood by the stove and cooked me silver dollar pancakes, one after another from a cast-iron griddle, until I had my fill. I was around five, and remember it like yesterday. We had wonderful maple syrup by the gallon in those days, and that place called “the Shack” was a respite from long muggy Augusts downstate.

In this picture is my dear Mom’s favorite teapot, of an indescribable periwinkle color, which somehow I grabbed at the right time. Sadly she can’t even recall it these days, but I keep the memory alive with great enjoyment, and reverence for happy days growing up.
