THE GREAT JUDI DENCH, AND PAVILION, NY

I am 60 going on 70

The great Judi Dench is priceless in this little spoof I want to share. It’s the duo we all know from ‘The Sound of Music,’ ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen.’

Admire her art of comic timing, the sweetness of her singing, and aside all the campiness, her skills as an actress capable at times to really give the ambiguous illusion of the tender teenager she is playing.

As a footnote, hearing this brings back to me carefully put away memories of my very first public appearance. I was the boy paired to sing in this duo with a girl who was actually two years older than me! By the way, I was 15, going on 16, not 17 going on 18.

But I still look pretty good in Lederhosen!

Mrs. Thomas prepared us, and played the piano ever so lovingly for us, at that concert in the gymnasium of our wonderful high school in Pavilion, NY in 1967. Both my parents were there. And soon, I began taking weekly voice lessons in Rochester…

Thanks to Jim Fretz, who added this information: Dame Judi Dench as Liesl von Trapp at the “Some Enchanted Evening: Richard Rogers” gala concert recorded at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in May 2002, as part of the Richard Rodgers centennial celebrations.
