THE PATIENT STILLNESS OF WAITING

Summoned to make an urgent flight

After endless hours crossing the sea

The stillness of my beautiful homeland

Reveals Nature’s constant rebounding in Linwood.

So what has changed? I still feel

The warmth of her touch,

The half-smile at my feeble jokes,

Her serenity as we listen to Handel.

Mum is still very much alive.

Diminished in so many ways,

Like autumn’s amber traces at my feet

The warmth of the morning star emerges another day

Through the haze of chill and uncertainty.

Her incandescent kindness is felt by all,

Her quiet persistence along each step of the journey

That is her gift, now and forever

As today we both gaze with uncertainty into the future.
