MID-CENTURY RADIO VOICES

If you were born after 1960, just move on.

This bit of nostalgia, mixed with parody by Stan Freberg, took me back to the speaking voices of so many early broadcasts and panel shows in the old days. My oldest brother actually had all the catalogs and supplies from the legendary Heathkit company, and could assemble radios, ham radios, color TV sets, and “high-fidelity” speakers. Our house was full of the stuff, and before I overtook his bedroom when he went to college, every inch of it was literally invaded with a specialized underworld of transistors, those big radio tubes that take minutes to warm up, and enormous Sputnik-era tuning dials.

He specialized in ham radio, and I still recall his call number, K2J__, and with his hundreds of friends around the world, he was a precursor in many ways to Facebook.

Listen here for the true tone of the mid-fifties!
