SEPTEMBER 27

“Presentiments are strange things: and so are sympathies; and so are signs; and the three combined make one mystery to which humanity had not yet found the key.”
-Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

Been here before. The speeding taxi ride back from Ville d’Avray. Another brilliantly lit afternoon. And of course, “La grande dame,” the Eiffel Tower. Inevitably, the view today reminds me of my own post here on April 11, with my premonitions at that moment of the difficult days that would indeed follow.

But today it’s kind of fun. I’m bringing back some very personal, and very heavy, treasures: four enormous boxes of archives dating from 1978 to 1998. Boxes jammed with concert and opera programs, photos, paper reviews, and sound documents I had stored there 22 years ago, and never reopened.

I feel the presentiment that this can only be interesting…
